The sun is often referred to as a risk factor for skin cancer. Sunscreen is therefore almost mandatory. The higher the SPF, the better, you might think. Health experts, however, warn against the excessive use of sunscreen. Because the higher the sun protection factor, the less vitamin D can be formed in the skin and the greater the risk of vitamin D deficiency. In turn, a vitamin D deficiency is the cause of many chronic diseases and should be avoided as much as possible.
Health experts advise to take regular sunbaths without sunscreen
In December 2010, seven health organizations gave out - including Cancer Research UK and the National Osteoporosis Society- made a joint statement recommending that the population go more into the sun.
For decades was warned of the potential dangers of direct sunlight. Meanwhile, however, several studies refute the assumption that the sun is completely dangerous and instead show their vital importance to human health.
And so even those health experts agreed that humans need regular sunlight for adequate vitamin D formation and thus for his health - without the solar radiation is blocked by sunscreen or sunscreen.

Sun creams cause vitamin D deficiency
The constant warnings of the sun have caused millions of people to stay away from the sun or at least to sunscreen themselves before going to the fresh air. The use of sunscreens and sunblocks has at least two disadvantages: first, the organism is burdened with some unfavorable ingredients from the sunscreen, and second, blocking the sun's radiation means that little or no vitamin D can be produced in the body.
The higher the sun protection factor, the less vitamin D is formed. A sun protection factor of 50 blocks the UVB radiation completely. But also sun protection factors around 10 can prevent the UVB radiation up to 90 percent.
Anyone who regularly uses high sun protection factors, is ultimately completely or to a large extent dependent on a vitamin D supply via the diet. Vitamin D, on the one hand, is present in foods in only very small doses, on the other hand, and is preferred in foods that are barely or only consumed in small quantities today (eg fatty fish and liver).
Consequently, the vitamin D supply can hardly be covered by food alone. A chronic vitamin D deficiency is the result.
Vitamin D deficiency promotes the development of civilization diseases
In the March 2010 issue of the journal Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism A study was published, according to which a large part of the population in the industrialized countries, namely 59 percent should suffer from a vitamin D deficiency. The head of the study, dr. Richard Kremer from the health center of the McGill Universityin Montreal / Canada said:
An abnormal vitamin D levelis related to a whole series ofDiseases. These include cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes, as well as cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases (eg diabetes type 1, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, etc.).
Vitamin D supports weight loss
In Dr. Kremer's study also showed clearly the connection between a lack of vitamin D and the accumulation of body fat. In other words: Sunshine supports the reduction of body fat and thus the weight loss in overweight.
Vitamin D activates the immune system
Further research proves the influence of vitamin D on the human immune system. Professor Carsten Geisler from the Faculty of International Health, Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen has shown in recent studies that the T cells of the immune system remain inactive without vitamin D and therefore little or no protection against pathogens such. B. viruses.
T cells belong to the specific immune defense of the body, that is, they are targeted to defuse very specific pathogens or alien cells. But they can only become active if vitamin D is in the bloodstream. Only then will the T-cells begin to track down the intruders and destroy them.

Recharge your batteries several times a week
Professor Rona MacKie of the UK Dermatologists Association said on BBC News that in the past, the sun's radiation was far too negative.
So it pays to enjoy the sun several times, and above all regularly. Of course you do not completely leave the sunscreen.
Rona MacKie suggests going to the sun several times a week for 10 to 15 minutes without sunscreen and lightly clothed. With these moderate sun-baths one can ensure the vitamin D-formation and enter at the same time no skin cancer risks. If you want to stay in the sun for longer, you first apply sunscreen - after the first 10 to 15 minutes.
And when the sun is not shining?
Unfortunately, Professor MacKie's advice in northern climes can only be implemented in the summer - if you have the time. Also, their time (10 to 15 minutes) applies only to very fair-skinned people. People with darker skin types or tanned people need much longer stays in the sun in order to be able to absorb the UVB radiation required for vitamin D production in sufficient quantities through the skin.
Apart from that, the skin may become less and less vitamin D with increasing age, making it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of older people.
In winter, it is almost impossible in Central Europe to soak up vitamin D in the sun. If it even shines, the sun is too low, so it does not make the much needed UVB radiation down to earth. Therefore, in the winter, the body must consume its vitamin D reserves, which it has created in the summer - if he has ever created any.
Take vitamin D correctly
These supplies usually do not last the entire winter. This may well be one of the reasons why many people's immune systems begin to show weaknesses in January and that flu epidemics are rolling through the countryside.
To be on the safe side, you can resort to vitamin D supplements during the winter months. The dose is determined as needed. How you can determine the right dose for you, we have explained here: Vitamin D - the right intake
