Kreuzblütengewächse against cancer

Kreuzblütengewächse against cancer

The vegetables broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, radish and Co are foods that can be used effectively against various diseases because of their special ingredients. In particular, the mustard oils contained therein are able to prevent cancers and even dissolve existing tumors. This has already been scientifically proven in many studies It is therefore worthwhile to take a closer look at these wonderful foods.

Cabbage contains valuable mustard oils

Broccoli, bok-choi (Chinese cabbage), brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, radishes, radish, mustard, swede, turnips or watercress - all these plants are among the cruciferous plants (lat. Brassicacea). Kreuzblütengewächse are characterized by their special ingredients.

Above all, they contain large amounts of anti-cancer substances, which are under the collective term mustard oils are known. Among other things, they are responsible for the pungent taste of radish and co. Sulforaphane is probably the most well-known ingredient of cruciferous vegetables - especially in the fight against cancer.

Kreuzblütengewächsen work against cancer

There are now many scientific studies that show that adequate consumption of cruciferous vegetables can protect the body against cancer, because the mustard oils contained in it make sure that cancer cells commit a type of suicide (programmed cell death or death) apoptosis). In addition, mustard oils contribute to the prevention of cancer-promoting cell changes.

For example, several studies have found that those participants who ingest most of the isothiocyanates by consuming cruciferous plants had the lowest bladder cancer risk. In the investigations, the protective effect could be detected especially in pensioners and smokers.

In a study with rats, it was discovered that the risk of developing bladder cancer decreases as broccoli consumption increases. In animals already infected, the progression of the disease slowed down when the animals ate a lot of broccoli. Broccoli can also seem to increase the chances of coping with breast cancer and even increase the chances of not getting it.

Scientists found that mustard oils strengthen the activity of various antioxidant enzymes. The mustard oils from cruciferous plants can also protect our cells from free radicals and thereby prevent cancer and many other diseases.

But not only cruciferous plants contain mustard oils. Even the so-called miracle tree Moringa tastes as sharp as horseradish and provides - if daily consumed 10 g as a powder - with an effective extra dose of mustard oil glycosides.

Diindolylmethane (DIM)

The mustard oil indole-3-carbinol is converted during digestion into the highly effective substance diindolylmethane (DIM), which inhibits the activity of two proteins involved in the spread of cancer. It has been scientifically proven that the treatment of cancer cells with DIM can reduce their spread by up to 80%.

Scientists believe that this discovery could make current cancer therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy more effective, as DIM could halt, or at least slow, the spread of cancer. DIM also strengthens the immune function, which can ultimately contribute to the fact that cancer cells can not even multiply.

Unfortunately, the question arises as to whether the pharmaceutical industry and conventional medicine really want to take advantage of the marvelous features of the DIM, because that would probably significantly reduce their profits.

Isothiocyanates (ITC)

Recent studies have found a link between the consumption of high isothiocyanate (ITC) cruciferous vegetables - especially white turnip and Chinese cabbage - and a lower risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

But younger women can benefit from the high proportion of ITC cruciferous vegetables, if for other reasons. Women who are in a part of the menopause climacteric period and who have a certain predisposition have a higher risk of breast cancer than women without this predisposition. However, the study showed that the increased consumption of cruciferous vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer in this woman as well.

Consume cruciferous vegetables as raw as possible

It is important to know that cooked cross-flowering plants do not provide the same protection as raw vegetables, as the cooking process can destroy the mustard oils. During cooking, cruciferous vegetables can lose between 30 and 60% of their anti-cancer ingredients.

The best recommendation is therefore to eat as many of these vegetables raw. They can be cut small or grated as a salad or enjoyed with a delicious dip as a snack. Even spinach tastes raw - in combination with various fruit prepared as a smoothie - excellent.

However, certain vegetables are not suitable for raw consumption, such as Brussels sprouts. However, when steamed gently, much of the effect of its precious mustard oils is retained as well.

How tumors develop

Billions of body cells renew themselves every day by sharing and thus copying themselves. A tumor develops when individual cells behave differently in their growth or lifespan than is normally the case. These cells are called degenerate cells. They divide in an uncontrollable way and eventually form the tumor. They no longer respond to the signals the body uses to cause them to die.

Certain ingredients of the cruciferous vegetables, as well as the DIM, help dying damaged cells in when it's time. This prevents them from further dividing and eventually growing into a tumor. For this reason, the consumption of cruciferous vegetables can protect against various cancers and even slow down the growth of already existing tumors.

Cabbage contains a lot of vitamin C.

Simple cabbage has a variety of health-promoting properties. It counteracts infectious skin problems, strengthens weak bones and can reduce inflammatory processes. These properties can be explained with its high content of vitamin C and vitamin K.

Vitamin C reacts with iron, activating the formation of healthy cartilage tissue in the joints. Antioxidants such as vitamin C also ensure that free radicals do not attack the cartilage tissue and thus significantly less bone damage. This reduces the risk of developing osteoarthritis. The vitamin is also an important component of collagen-forming proteins. Collagen is one of the most important building blocks for bones, ligaments, tendons and teeth.

Vitamin K for healthy bones

Kohl and the other representatives of the Kreuzblütengewächse are also full of vitamin K, which is very important for the healthy growth of bone and cartilage tissue. Only in combination with vitamin K can the protein osteocalcin be formed in the bone, which binds calcium and is responsible for a healthy bone structure. A deficiency of this important vitamin contributes to a lower bone density and thus also increases the risk of osteoporosis.

A study lasting more than ten years showed that in older people with very low vitamin K levels, the probability of a hip fracture is increased by about 30%. Other research studies even found that men and women who consumed a particularly high intake of vitamin K were up to 65% less likely to break their thighs.

The frontrunner among the vitamin K-containing food is kale, followed by spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, chives and parsley.

Broccoli activates the immune system

Back to broccoli. This vegetable has two exceptionally valuable ingredients that, on the one hand, enormously activate your immune system and, on the other hand, have anti-cancer properties.

With a delicious meal of broccoli, white cabbage and kale you support your immune system particularly effectively. DIM, an ingredient of the cruciferous vegetables already known to you, strengthens the immune system by increasing the number of cytokines in the body.

These are proteins that control immune cell formation. They increase the advent of macrophages - the phagocytes that kill bacteria, viruses and degenerate cells - and double the number of white blood cells that fight infection. In this way, they protect the body from numerous diseases.

Sulforaphane has an antioxidant effect

Broccoli also contains the mustard oil sulforaphane, which has been proven in many scientific studies to have a strong antioxidant effect. Sulphoraphan activates special endogenous enzymes that fight and neutralize free radicals. In addition, it is able to destroy degenerate cells and even dissolve existing tumors.

Sulforaphane destroys cancer cells

The extremely positive health properties of sulforaphane, which is mainly found in cruciferous plants such as cauliflower and broccoli, have been known for many years. American studies from 2003 confirmed its anti-cancer effects.

The studies showed that sulforaphane destroys special cancer cell proteins needed for cell division. Thus, this substance can prevent the division of degenerate cells and thus be used extremely effectively for the treatment of cancers of various kinds. Even in the most aggressive form of leukemia, especially in children, sulforaphane can be effective.

A group of scientists at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas has its study results in the journal PLoS One released. They found that a sulforaphane concentrate can lower the number of leukemia cells in acute lymphocytic leukemia under laboratory conditions. The research leader Daniel Lacorazza commented:

In acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the white blood cells multiply uncontrollably. This overproduction reduces the normal formation of blood in the bone marrow. Although the cure rate is around 80%, some children unfortunately do not respond to chemo therapy. In such cases we need new, alternative therapies.

Concentrated sulforaphane gives best results

To investigate the efficacy of the substance in existing tumors, scientists brought human leukemia cells and healthy lymphoblasts from young patients into contact with the sulforaphane concentrate. They discovered that the cancer cells died, while the sulforaphane showed no effect in healthy cells in the control group.

The research team believes that sulforaphane locks into the cellular matrix and destroys the proteins needed to spread the cancer. However, the scientists pointed out that further studies are needed to pinpoint which proteins are involved and how this mechanism actually works. Dr. Lacorazza concluded with the words:

Sulforaphane is a substance found in cruciferous plants. In our study, however, we used a pure, highly concentrated form of this substance. Of course, it is healthy to eat cruciferous vegetables, but of course the consumption of this vegetable does not have the same effect that we were able to achieve with the concentrate under laboratory conditions.

Sulforaphane as a cancer prophylaxis

Regular consumption of cruciferous vegetables (three to four servings per week) in combination with a sulforaphane extract for nutritional supplementation can effectively protect your body against the onset of cancer.

When shopping, make sure that the vegetables are fresh, dark green in color and certified organically grown, as a pesticide-laden vegetable may not be beneficial to your health.

It is also important that you prepare the vegetables gently and chew very well that the sulforaphane is released only after thorough chewing.

If you take sulforaphane as a nutritional supplement, the amount of 5 mg to 15 mg milligrams is recommended. For therapeutic purposes, 30 mg sulforaphane should be taken by day.
