Vegan diet stops risk factors for cancer

How exactly can the vegan diet protect against cancer or help with cancer cure? If you look at the risk factors of a cancer, then the following are superficially considered:

Vegetable proteins - in contrast to animal proteins - have an anti-cancer effect

In December 1999, it was found that a vegan diet and here explicitly the plant proteins drive processes in the body, which have an anti-cancer effect. The special composition of plant proteins - according to the former researchers - would harmonize the glucagon and insulin activities. Plant proteins are made up of more nonessential amino acids than animal proteins. Exactly this (the allegedly worse biological value) is known to be a disadvantage of vegan proteins. However, with regard to successful cancer prevention, this property of plant proteins proves to be a great advantage.

The composition of plant proteins promotes glucagon production. Glucagon in turn promotes the formation of the IGF-1 antagonist IGFBP-1. The IGF-1 level drops. Low IGF-1 levels not only reduce inflammatory responses but also inhibit carcinogenesis. This explains the lower risk for vegans of some types of cancer, such as: Breast, colon and prostate cancers.

Soy protein better than animal protein

In 2007, the topic was taken up again and in the journal Nutrition and Cancer discussed: It was the protein intake in prostate cancer patients and simultaneously the level of their IGF-1 levels - both in a group that underwent a diet change and now low in fat and vegan ass (including 58 g of soy protein per day) as well in a control group that stayed with the original omnivorous diet with meat, dairy & Co.

After one year, high protein intake - whether animal or soy protein - had increased IGF-1 levels. However, the protective IGFBP-1 level increased only in the vegan group. Vegan diet for lymph node cancer

From 2015, there is an interesting case report from a 42-year-old woman with a malignant tumor from the group of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (follicular lymphoma stage 3). The patient undertook a 21-day fasting (with water only) under medical supervision. Already after this fasting cure, the previously enlarged lymph nodes had become much smaller again. Afterwards she consumed a minimal processed herbal diet - without sugar, oils and salt. In further examinations - 6 and 9 months after her nutritional change - the patient remained symptom free and the lymph nodes were not palpable.

Cancer risk decreases significantly with vegan diet

In February 2016, an Italian review aimed to review the health-protective effect of the vegetarian and vegan diets based on 96 studies shows that these diets can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. The risk of cancer in vegetarian diets decreased by 8 percent, and in vegan diets by 15 percent. The risk of ischemic heart disease was reduced by 25 percent.

Therefore, nutritional or lifestyle factors that accelerate FGF23 formation are also considered to promote cancer and metastasis.

For example, FGF23 formation is accelerated by a high intake of phosphates and calcium. Both are considered risk factors for z. B. aggressive prostate cancer. While plant-based diets are not necessarily poorer in phosphates and calcium, they often deliver these minerals in lower bioavailability than animal products. In this way, they can downregulate FGF23 levels and may explain the lower risk of cancer in vegan or near-vegan cultures.
