Declared harmless for decades and mixed indiscriminately into liquid soaps, mouthwashes, shower gels and many other products, the chemical Triclosan has recently become known as a harmful toxin. Triclosan should not only lead to hormonal imbalances, but also to antibiotic-resistant super-bacteria.
Triclosan is everywhere
Triclosan is a highly potent disinfectant that has been used as a bacterial killer and antibacterial liquid soap, mouthwash, dishwashing detergent, shaving gel, toothpaste, shower gels, cosmetics and many other everyday consumer goods for many years.
Originally, triclosan was developed as a component of medical soaps to make surgeon hands as sterile as possible before they reach the scalpel. Meanwhile, Triclosan is found not only in the above-mentioned hygiene articles, but also in some pesticides, in toys, shoes and even in special so-called anti-Mief clothing, where the chemical is to prevent the formation of sweat-producing bacteria. It is also incorporated into upholstery, flooring, mattresses, toothbrushes, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, leather, car trim, camping gear and motorcycle helmets.

75 percent of the population is burdened with triclosan
In this way, almost every person comes into closer contact with triclosan several times a day. The report of the American Disease Control Authority that triclosan can be detected in the urine of nearly 75 percent of the population, therefore hardly surprised. If Triclosan were just in urine and did not do anything special there, no one would have to go into it. Unfortunately, Triclosan has become a threat not only to humans, but also to the environment.
Triclosan damages skin and thyroid
The environmental organization Greenpeace found out that Triclosan would be released from the clothes by sweat within an hour - despite the fact that the manufacturer of such textiles had claimed that the chemical was firmly attached to the fiber.
Textiles and hygiene products with triclosan massively damage the skin's natural protective mechanisms, cause irritation and, as studies from the years 2006 and 2009 have shown, can impair the thyroid gland in such a way that the formation of thyroid hormones can be poor.
Triclosan provokes formation of super bacteria
Due to the widespread use of triclosan, bacteria get used to strong disinfectants and can easily develop resistance to them. Triclosan already led to so-called cross-resistance. This means that bacteria that have become resistant to triclosan can no longer be impressed by antibiotics. The result is that more and more so-called super-pathogens can arise, for which there will eventually be no more control possibility. (Read more in the text The chemicals mix called toothpaste)
Triclosan endangers waters
The wastewater releases significant quantities of triclosan into the environment. Even triclosan maker Ciba admits that the chemical is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms. In the water, however, Triclosan even transforms into an even more toxic substance. This degrades even more slowly in the environment than triclosan.
Fish are already heavily contaminated with triclosan. Under the influence of UV light, triclosan can also become dioxin, one of the most potent poisons humanity has ever experienced. This triclosan is involved in the widespread dioxin contamination and poisoning of our planet.

American authorities are reviewing Triclosan's use
The American Soap and Detergent Association continues to insist that triclosan is safe, safe and effective.
Yet, the $ 30 billion cleaners industry is slowly but surely losing its hold as the FDA appears to be busy re-evaluating the hazardous chemical. However, it was also high time. After all - it has been said from various sources - the authority has been working for over 38 years rather unsuccessfully on a solution for Triclosan.
And, for all those years when the FDA was unaware how Triclosan's use could be regulated to protect people and the environment, the chemical was allowed to happily and almost without restriction wherever industry saw fit required to be used, too.
Triclosan remains largely uncontrolled in the EU as there are virtually no restrictions.
If Triclosan had at least some advantage, one could get carried away for a risk-benefit analysis. But even this effort can be saved. In 2005, a panel of experts appointed by the FDA said there was no evidence that, for example, triclosan soaps worked better than regular soaps, so there is really no reason to opt for triclosan-based soaps.
A study published in the same year by the University of Marburg's Institute of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery investigated the effects of various mouthwashes on gingivitis and concluded that neither triclosan-containing mouthwash nor those with amine fluoride could influence chronic gingivitis in any way.
When buying, look for triclosan
Who wants to give up Triclosan already now (before it will hopefully come soon to a legal regulation), which examine the labels of all cosmetic and cleaning products, since Triclosan must be declared in each case. The anti-microbial finish of clothing and textiles with triclosan is usually praised, so you can deliberately avoid these products.
