A very important aspect here is the aluminum load of our drinking water. The effect of aluminum on brain health is particularly dramatic when drinking water is both acidic and low in minerals. Officially, you do not really know much about the real causes of Alzheimer's. Maybe it's just not talked about, otherwise the solution would be so simple.

But even the aluminum alone would not be so tragic. It only becomes serious when a high aluminum content in the water is combined with at least three other unfavorable factors:
- A low magnesium and calcium content of the water or a poor human condition with these two minerals.
- A low silica content of the water or a poor human condition with silica.
- A low pH of the water (acidic water)
This awkward combination occurs when low-alkali (acidic) surface water is unable to offset the effects of acid rain.
In such low-alkali regions, which are heavily polluted by acid rain, the increasing proportion of dissolved aluminum found in both groundwater and surface water causes major ecological damage. It also appears that aluminum is a major environmental risk factor associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Aluminum favors Alzheimer's: clear evidence
Clear evidence that too much aluminum in drinking water can affect memory was provided in 1988. An incident at the Camelford waterworks in Cornwall, England, caused people there to drink water with enormously elevated levels of aluminum sulphate. Memory loss was a common complaint among the unfortunate people who ingested this aluminum-contaminated water.
Evidence for an association between dementia and aluminum also comes from McLachlan's Ontario study in which 668 brains from deceased Alzheimer's patients were examined. She proved that the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease was 2.5 times greater among people living in a community where drinking water contained more than 100 micrograms of aluminum per liter than those whose drinking water contained less aluminum,

Depending on the group of patients, the probability of developing Alzheimer's was between 6.7 and 8.14 times higher in these cases. Their brains were therefore about 7-8 times more likely to be affected by Alzheimer's when they regularly drank water that was high in aluminum.
Various authors have tried to quantify the relationship between Alzheimer's and aluminum. Forbes and McLachlan, for example, investigated this relationship in people who were 80 or older.
High aluminum values - high risk of Alzheimer's
After studying six other factors, namely fluoride, silica, iron, pH, and cloudiness, the two researchers discovered that people living in areas where drinking water contains more than 250 micrograms of aluminum per liter, nearly 10 times high probability of Alzheimer's disease.
This finding was corroborated by a previous Ontario long-term study that found that men over the age of 75 or older who drank water containing at least 0.0847 mg aluminum per liter were 1.72 times more likely to have limited brain activity,
Likewise, the probability of dying from Alzheimer's increased by a factor of 3.54 for those who drank water containing at least 0.336 mg of aluminum per liter.
Aluminum Alzheimer's thesis confirmed in long-term study
A recent 13-year long-term study looked at 3,777 people aged 65 and over living in southwestern France from 1988-1989. She confirmed that those who drank water with an aluminum concentration above 0.1 mg per liter were twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's. However, just looking at the relationship between Alzheimer's and the amount of aluminum in drinking water may be too simple.
In 2000, Gauthier and co-workers reported a case study comparing the chemical composition of drinking water previously consumed by 58 elderly Alzheimer's patients with the composition of drinking water from a healthy control group matched in age and gender.
This study was carried out in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec. The exact determination of the aluminum component was made using standard analytical methods.
For the long-term consumption of drinking water (from 1945 until the onset of the disease), the total amount of aluminum was extrapolated, the total amount of dissolved aluminum, monomeric, organic and inorganic aluminum, polymeric aluminum and five other variants of the metal.
While there was no apparent link between Alzheimer's and the total amount of aluminum in drinking water, there was a clear association between monomeric aluminum and this after corrections in educational level, family dementia, and the presence of APO E4 (Alzheimer's gene) Disease (factor 2.67).

Monomeric aluminum accelerates cell death
The importance of monomeric (one-molecule) aluminum was confirmed by a study conducted by Prolo and colleagues in northwestern Italy, where drinking water contained between 5 micrograms and 1.22 mg per liter of aluminum.
The content of monomeric aluminum (this variant of the element is the easiest to penetrate into human cells) varied between 5 and 300 micrograms per liter. The University of California researchers found that the disease was most prevalent where the proportion of monomeric aluminum in drinking water was highest. In addition, they found that monomeric aluminum in cultures interferes with cell function and accelerates cell death, especially with the beta-amyloid protein.
Minerals compensate for damaging aluminum effect
The large amount of data collected in numerous geographic and epidemiological studies thus confirms a clear link between the uptake of aluminum, in particular monomeric aluminum in drinking water, and an increased incidence of Alzheimer's disease.
However, the negative effects of aluminum appear to be mitigated by silica, calcium and magnesium, especially in drinking water with a pH between 7.85 and 8.05.
Acidic drinking water with high aluminum values and a lack of silica, calcium and magnesium seems to be particularly dangerous.
Fluoride is also a known drug against aluminum and may also protect against Alzheimer's when the pH is high; however, it is known that high levels of fluorine in drinking water cause other health problems.
How aluminum triggers Alzheimer's
If aluminum is a cause of Alzheimer's, how does it trigger this form of dementia? It seems that individuals who have inherited the APO E4 gene are less able than others to break down the alzheimer's protein deposits (beta-amyloid and tau protein). Consequently, in regions with environmental factors that promote the deposition of beta-amyloid and tau protein, these individuals are at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's.
These environmental factors we have already summarized at the very beginning: It is u. a. acidic drinking water with a high content of aluminum and at the same time low levels of silica, magnesium and calcium.
If such water is constantly drunk, the aluminum can penetrate into the brain and weaken the enzyme choline acetyltransferase, thus causing an acetylcholine deficiency. A lack of acetylcholine promotes the growth of deposits.
Similarly, aluminum affects the enzymes calcium / calmodulin kinase II and alkaline phosphatase by promoting the formation of alzheimer's type deposits (neurofibrillary tangles).
However, Alzheimer's consists of more than deposits and bundles. Dave Shenk describes Alzheimer's in his interesting book The Forgetting as "death by a thousand subtractions". Scientific evidence supports this description. Barry Reisberg, a neurologist at the University of New York, noted in 1980 that the various stages of Alzheimer's disease represent a reversal of the progressive stages of childhood development.
Reverse development of the person affected
Reisberg showed that as the symptoms of the disease increase, the patient gradually loses his ability to think, co-ordinate, behave, speak and eat, inversely to the order in which he acquired it in his early childhood.
In the final stage of the disease, the patient is like a baby and can no longer walk, no longer sit without help and no longer smile or hold his head straight. Reisberg called this process of the thousand subtractions "retrogenesis", ie a "return to birth".
Although this reversion is not a perfect reversal, neurological tests show that as Alzheimer's progresses there is an almost exactly inverse relationship of neurological reflexes, glucose metabolism in the brain, and EEG activity.
The further the disease progresses, the more those skills decline. This evidence led Reisberg to use the image of a giant ball of wool wound up in childhood, but unwrapped by Alzheimer's. From birth, during infancy, and thereafter, the ball grows steadily, but Alzheimer's it shrinks, and slowly but surely reduces the functioning of the brain.

Sarin and colleagues showed in a brain study of monkeys fed with aluminum permanently that this metal had inhibited three membrane-bound enzymes: Na + K + ATPase, acetylcholinesterase and, interestingly, the myelin-specific enzyme 2, 3 cyclic nucleotide phosphohydrolase.
This inhibition causes a rapid dilution of the myelin layer in rats by 3% and in mice by 4%. It can also alter their composition by augmenting the galactolipids and making myelin more susceptible to oxidation processes.
It is not a big step in this destructive process to see the potential cause of demyelination and associated retrogenesis seen in Alzheimer's patients.
Aluminum weakens antioxidants and promotes oxidative stress
In addition, aluminum inhibits the enzyme phospholipase A2, so that it can probably develop dysfunction of the meninges. Aluminum also seems to reduce the amount of the body's own antioxidants and detoxification enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase) and thus the human immune system. In turn, a deficiency of these enzymes leads to increased oxidative stress, cell damage, and can in the long term promote the development of Alzheimer's.
It will therefore be difficult for medicines to ever cure this disease, unless they succeed in preventing aluminum uptake into the body.
How to prevent Alzheimer's
Drinking too acidic water, which contains an increased amount of aluminum and too little calcium, magnesium and silica, obviously promotes Alzheimer's.
One could naively assume that it would be relatively easy to pass a law that sets lower aluminum maximums and prescribes the enrichment of drinking water with calcium, magnesium and possibly also silica.

However, governments not only seem to have little interest in increasing the magnesium content of drinking water, they even allow waterworks to add aluminum sulphate flocculant. This measure reduces the amount of sediment in the aqueduct, but it also greatly increases the amount of dissolved aluminum, especially where the water is acidic.
Aluminum sulphate must definitely be replaced by alternatives. Nutrition in the western world promotes Alzheimer's in three ways:
At first, it is sometimes low in calcium, but very often very low in magnesium, so people who are traditionally fed are very susceptible to aluminum intoxication.
